The Pittsburgh Foundation Renewable Scholarships

The Pittsburgh Foundation provides scholarship opportunities for students to pursue their educational goals. Scholarships are available for graduating high school seniors who are attending community colleges, four-year universities, and career/technical schools.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Eligibility

Applicants will apply to The Pittsburgh Foundation Renewable Scholarships. One common application is completed to apply to any of the below funds. Applicants must meet the following criteria and the criteria of one or more of the scholarships listed:

  • Be a United States citizen or permanent resident
  • Be a graduating high school senior from:
    • Indiana: Kokomo High School
    • Pennsylvania:
      • any Pittsburgh Public High School
      • Albert Gallatin High School
      • Avella High School
      • Burgettstown High School
      • Central Catholic High School
      • Deer Lakes High School
      • East Allegheny High School
      • Fairview High School
      • Highlands High School
      • Jeannette High School
      • Keystone Oaks High School
      • Oakland Catholic High School
      • Penn Hills High School
      • Penn-Trafford High School
      • Springdale High School
      • The Neighborhood Academy
      • West Mifflin High School
    • West Virginia: Paw Paw High School
  • Be enrolled in or plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate at an accredited two– or four–year college/university, or vocational-technical school in the United States
    • Certification programs must be through an accredited institution and must run on a standard academic semester calendar. Certification programs must be a minimum of one semester/term in length and applicants must be enrolled at the time awards are disbursed in August.
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent), unless specified otherwise
  • Awards are for undergraduate study only

3R Scholarship Fund 

  • Be a graduating high school senior at Keystone Oaks High School (PA)
  • Be enrolled or plan to enroll in an accredited four-year college or university
  • Minimum 3.6 GPA
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial need
  • This award is renewable three times or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Albert L. Pranatis Scholarship

  • Be a graduating high school senior at East Allegheny High School (PA) or West Mifflin High School (PA)
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Preference to applicants pursuing a degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Physics, Geology, Mathematics, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, or Physics
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • This award is renewable three times or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Angelo and Irene Ravigoni Scholarship

  • Be a graduating high school senior at Highlands High School (PA) or Jeannette High School (PA)
  • Preference given to applicants enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited vocational-technical school or two-year college/university
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Financial need is considered but not required
  • This award is renewable three times or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment.
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only
    • If the applicant pool allows, at least one (1) award will be granted to a recipient from each high school

Baskin Family Charitable Trust

  • Be a graduating high school senior at Fairview High School (PA) or The Neighborhood Academy (PA)
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial need
  • This award is renewable three times or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, which occurs first, based on maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only
    • If the applicant pool allows, at least one (1) award will be granted to a recipient from each high school

Droze and Margaret Zembower Scholarship Fund

  • Be a graduating high school senior at Paw Paw High School (WV)
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial need
  • This award is renewable three times or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Emery C. Toth, Jr. Scholarship Trust

  • Be a graduating high school senior at Central Catholic High School (PA) or Penn-Trafford High School (PA)
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Preference to applicants pursuing a degree in Music Education
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Preference given to students who are members of Penn-Trafford High School band or chorus groups
  • This award is renewable three times or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Eugene and Nell Petrucci Avella Scholarship Fund

  • Be a graduating high school senior at Avella High School (PA)
  • Be enrolled or plan to enroll in an accredited four-year college or university
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial need
  • Preference given to applicants with demonstrated community service
  • This award is renewable three times or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment

  • Be a graduating high school senior at Burgettstown High School (PA)

  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial need
  • Preference given to applicants with demonstrated community service

Ira R. and Frances Wood Scholarship Fund

  • Be a graduating high school senior at Deer Lakes High School (PA) or Highlands High School (PA)
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA

  • Preference given to applicants with demonstrated community service
  • This award is renewable three times or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment

Jacob J. Harbiger Scholarship Fund

  • Be a graduating high school senior at Albert Gallatin High School (PA)
  • Preference given to residents of Fayette County
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Preference given to applicants who are pursuing a degree in Agriculture or STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) degree
  • Financial need is considered but not required
  • This award is renewable three times or until a master’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment

Katherine Marie Ferrick/Elizabeth McCabe Memorial Scholarship Fund

  • Be a graduating high school senior at Central Catholic High School (PA) or Oakland Catholic High School (PA)
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Be pursuing a degree in Nursing
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial need
  • This award is renewable three times or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment

Klimenko Meshanko Memorial Scholarship Fund for Springdale High School

  • Be a graduating high school senior at Springdale High School (PA)
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial need
  • This award is renewable three times or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment

Louis Herrell & Shirley Herrell Paw Paw WV HS Scholarship

  • Be a graduating high school senior at Paw Paw High School (WV)
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial need
  • This award is renewable three times or until a master’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment

Marilyn and Wayne Croushore Scholarship Fund

  • Be a graduating high school senior at Penn Hills High School (PA)
  • Minimum 2.7 GPA
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial need
  • This award is renewable three times or until a master’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Robert L. Vann Scholarship Fund

  • Be a graduating high school senior at any Pittsburgh Public High School (PA)
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial need
  • Preference given to applicants who self-identify as Black, African, or African American
  • This award is renewable three times or until a master’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment
  • An estimated 3 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Wherrett Memorial Fund

  • Be a graduating high school senior at Kokomo High School (IN)
  • Be enrolled or plan to enroll in an accredited two- or four-year college or university
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • This award is renewable three times or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Awards

Total distribution and the amount of each award for each fund shall be determined by The Pittsburgh Foundation.

Awards are for undergraduate or graduate study only.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in late June.

Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.

Please make sure to add studentsupport@scholarshipamerica.org as well as the program email address as safe senders in your email contact list.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of The Pittsburgh Foundation. Payment is made in July or early August.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic performance
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances

Financial need, as calculated by Scholarship America, is considered but may not be required.

If an award required or prefers applicants who demonstrate financial need, a one-time honorarium of $2,500 may be granted to those who do not demonstrate financial need.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of The Pittsburgh Foundation play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Requirements

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
    • Student name
    • School name
    • Grades
    • Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.
