Scholarship Sponsor Q&A: Modern Woodmen Scholarship Programs

Modern Woodmen of America takes its name from the spirit of pioneer woodmen of the 1800s. Founded in 1883, Modern Woodmen is a fraternal financial services organization that has been clearing financial burdens, protecting families and helping communities for decades.

Modern Woodmen first established a college scholarship program for its members nationwide in 1970. The organization joined forces with Scholarship America in 2017, focusing on a scholarship competition for members who are high school seniors planning to continue their education after graduation. In 2025, Modern Woodmen added a second scholarship for members ages 21 and older. Now in its second year, the program will be accepting applications through Feb. 2, 2026.

Scholarship America: How does your scholarship program relate to the larger mission of Modern Woodmen of America?

Modern Woodmen: Our scholarship program directly supports our mission of improving the quality of life for our members and their communities. Education is a cornerstone of personal and professional growth, and by helping members pursue their academic goals, we strengthen families and foster leadership within communities. These programs reflect our commitment to fraternal values and lifelong learning.

Scholarship America: What inspired you to expand your scholarship offerings to more of your members in 2025?

Modern Woodmen: We recognize the growing financial challenges members face in pursuing education. We significantly increased support in 2025, offering more than half a million dollars to help meet those needs. Each year, we award 198 scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 to graduating high school seniors and provide $150,000 in scholarships for older members continuing their education. This expansion was inspired by member feedback and our desire to make education more accessible for all life stages.

Scholarship America: How does your scholarship program fit into your other offerings?

Modern Woodmen: Scholarships complement our broader suite of fraternal programs, which include financial planning, community service and family support initiatives. Together, these offerings support the common bonds that unite our members and create a holistic approach to member well-being, financial security, personal development and community engagement.

Scholarship America: What kind of feedback have you received from your members about the scholarship program?

Modern Woodmen: Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Members appreciate the flexibility of the program, which supports diverse educational paths — from trade schools to graduate degrees. Many have expressed gratitude for the financial support and the sense of belonging that comes from being part of an organization that invests in their future.

Scholarship America: Have you kept in touch with any of the recipients of either scholarship? How has the scholarship helped those members?

Modern Woodmen: Yes, we maintain connections through member stories featured in our publications and social channels. Recipients often share how the scholarships reduced financial stress, allowed them to focus on studies, and helped them pursue careers that give back to their communities—like Lila Ingold, a 2025 recipient who is using her scholarship to pursue an eventual career in dentistry. These success stories reinforce the impact of our programs on individual lives and society.
