Collegiate Scholarship Program

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Eligibility

Applicants to the Collegiate Scholarship Program must:

  • Be dependent* children of USAA employees who are either full-time, part-time, on long-term disability or military leave who have completed one year or more of employment with the company as of the application deadline date. Parent/guardian must be employed by USAA or on approved leave of absence as of the pay date prior to recipient selection.
*Dependent children are defined as natural and legally adopted children or stepchildren living in the employee’s household or primarily supported by the employee or qualifies as a federal tax exemption to the employee.
  • Be current graduating high school seniors and/or current year December graduates of high school. Current college/university students or previous year post-high school graduates are not eligible.
  • Be planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate program at an accredited two- or four-year college or university for the entire academic year. The undergraduate program must end with receiving an associate or bachelor’s degree. Technical/vocational degrees, diplomas, or certifications are not eligible to apply.
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale).

Students who have received the National Merit scholarship or USAA National Achievement scholarship are not eligible to receive the Collegiate Scholarship.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $2,500 award.
Up to 65 awards will be granted.

  • 25 Merit Awards. Awards are granted based upon merit only. The recipient does not need to supply financial information or demonstrate financial need.
  • 40 Financial Need Awards. Awards are granted based upon merit and financial need. The recipient must supply financial information and demonstrate financial need. If there are not enough applicants who demonstrate Scholarship America’s standard financial need criteria, the remaining awards will go to applicants whose parent/guardian employee is in a “Member Contact” role in the company whose annual salary is less than $100,000.

Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon maintaining a 2.5 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale in a full-time course of study, and continuation of the program by USAA. Students who receive this scholarship may receive a deferral for one school year taken on a case-by-case basis. If considering deferring, please contact us for more details.

Recipients who attend a United States military academy will be eligible for a one-time, nonrenewable award of $2,500.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Notification

Applicants will be notified in April.

Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.

Please make sure to add studentsupport@scholarshipamerica.org as well as the program email address as safe senders in your email contact list.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of USAA. Payment is made in one installment in early August.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic Record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work Experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances
  • An online recommendation.

Financial need will be considered for applicants who apply for a Financial Need Award and supply the required financial information on the application form. Applicants whose employee parent is a Member Contact role and make under $100,000 will be considered for the Financial Need award after those who demonstrate financial need under Scholarship America’s Standard Financial Need criteria and do not meet Scholarship America’s Standard Financial Need criteria.

Financial need will not be considered for applicants who apply for a Merit Award and/or do not supply the required financial information on the application form.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of USAA play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.

All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.
