SoCalGas Scholarship Program

SoCalGas has established a scholarship program to assist current high school seniors in select Southern California counties who plan to continue their education in college pursuing a STEM, finance, or accounting field of study.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Eligibility

Applicants to the SoCalGas Scholarship Program must:

  • Be high school seniors
  • Have a permanent address in Southern California (SoCalGas) service territory – Eligible counties:
    • Los Angeles
    • San Bernardino
    • Riverside
    • Kern
    • Tulare
    • Imperial
    • Ventura
    • Orange
    • Santa Barbara
    • Kings
    • Fresno
    • San Luis Obispo
  • Plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate study in a STEM field relevant to SoCalGas* at an accredited four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent

*Eligible fields include but are not limited to Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM). Finance and Accounting are eligible. Medical-related fields are not eligible.

SoCalGas or any other Sempra Energy company employees, elected officials and employee’s children/grandchildren, and children of retired employees are not eligible to apply.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $5,000 award. Up to 8 awards will be granted.

Assuming there are qualified applicants, at least 85% of awards will be awarded to underrepresented* students who plan to attend a four-year college or university located in the state of California and at least 50% of awards will be awarded applicants who self-identify as female.

*Students who self-identify as:

  • American Indian
  • Alaskan Native
  • Asian
  • Black or African American
  • Hispanic/Latino
  • Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander

Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance (maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) in a full-time course of study.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Recipients may be contacted for other opportunities with SoCalGas and will be invited to a recipients’ event in May 2026.

Recipients may not receive an award from any other SoCalGas scholarship in the same academic year.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in May.

Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.

Please make sure to add studentsupport@scholarshipamerica.org as well as the program email address as safe senders in your email contact list.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of SoCalGas. Payment is made in June.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic performance
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances
  • An online recommendation
  • An essay*

*Essay Topic: Address the challenges to meeting California’s net zero climate goals. How can clean gases such as renewable natural gas and hydrogen help achieve those goals? (1,000 characters) To learn more about the topic, visit the SoCalGas website for further information.

Financial need, as calculated by Scholarship America, will be considered and must be demonstrated for the student to receive an award.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of SoCalGas play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Requirements

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
    • Student name
    • School name
    • Grades
    • Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.

One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than April 6, 2026 1:00 PM Pacific Time.

Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.
