The NextEra Energy Foundation has established a scholarship program to assist eligible Florida high school seniors and undergraduates who plan to continue their education.

The NextEra Energy Scholarship Awards

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants will complete one application for consideration for all the scholarships under The NextEra Energy Scholarship Awards.

Eligibility

Applicants for the Students in SECME Program must:

  • Be a Florida high school senior residing in Brevard County, Broward County, Escambia County, Flagler County, Hendry County, Manatee County, Miami Dade County, Palm Beach County, Seminole County, or Volusia County
  • Have at least one year involvement in SECME program in high school by the end of senior year
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year
  • Have a minimum unweighted grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent)
  • Demonstrate as economically disadvantaged
  • Be a Florida resident and the household must be served by Florida Power & Light Company (electrical service provider)

Children of NextEra Energy and Florida Power & Light Company employees are ineligible.

Applicants for the FPL Trade and Technical Program must:

  • Be a Florida resident enrolled full-time at an accredited Florida trade school, community college, or technical center (individuals that can show proof of enrollment are eligible too)
  • Be in pursuit of certificates/degrees in:
    • Trade: Electrical Technology, Power Plant Operations, Solar Energy Systems, HVAC, Substations, Wind Turbines, Industrial Maintenance, Welding, or Instrumentation & Controls
    • Technical: Electrical, Mechanical, Environmental, and Industrial Energy Systems, Computer/Network Systems Technology, Cybersecurity, Industrial Automation Technology, Data Analytics/SCADA Systems, or Environmental Engineering
  • Have a minimum unweighted grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent)
  • Have an acceptance letter or articulation agreement with Florida college/university
  • Submit a career goal essay of interest in an energy sector
  • Demonstrate as economically disadvantaged
  • Be a Florida resident and the household must be served by Florida Power & Light Company (electrical service provider)
  • Have at least one year involvement in energy-related organizations or projects

Children of NextEra Energy and Florida Power & Light Company employees are ineligible.

Applicants for the FPL Workforce Ready Undergraduate Program must:

  • Be a Florida resident enrolled in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited Florida college/university
  • Be pursuing a degree in the energy industry
  • Have a minimum unweighted grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent)
  • Have completed minimum twenty-four (24) credit hours
  • Have an acceptance letter or articulation agreement with Florida college/university
  • Submit a career goal essay of interest in an energy sector
  • Demonstrate as economically disadvantaged
  • Be a Florida resident and the household must be served by Florida Power & Light Company (electrical service provider)
  • Have at least one year involvement in energy-related organizations or projects

Children of NextEra Energy and Florida Power & Light Company employees are ineligible.

Applicants for the FPL Workforce Ready Associates Program must:

  • Be a Florida resident enrolled full-time in an associate’s degree program at an accredited Florida community college, state college, or technical college
  • Be pursuing a degree in the energy industry
  • Have a minimum unweighted grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent)
  • Have completed a minimum of nine (9) credit hours
  • Have an acceptance letter or articulation agreement with Florida college/university
  • Submit a career goal essay of interest in an energy sector
  • Have demonstrated interest in energy sector careers
  • Demonstrate as economically disadvantaged
  • Be a Florida resident and the household must be served by Florida Power & Light Company (electrical service provider)
  • Have at least one year involvement in energy-related organizations or projects

Children of NextEra Energy and Florida Power & Light Company employees are ineligible.

Awards

Students in SECME Program: If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an annual award of $5,000. Up to ten recipients will be awarded.

  • Awards are renewable up to three years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and full-time enrollment.

FPL Trade and Technical Program: If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an annual award of a $5,000 award. One recipient will be awarded.

  • Awards are renewable up to three years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and full-time enrollment.

FPL Workforce Ready Undergraduate Program: If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an annual award of $5,000. One recipient will be awarded.

  • Awards are renewable up to three years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and full-time enrollment.

FPL Workforce Ready Associates Program: If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an annual award of $5,000. One recipient will be awarded.

  • Awards are renewable up to three years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, full-time enrollment.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Awards can be used for any education-related expenses including but not limited to tuition, room and board, books and required educational fees.

Notification

All applicants will be notified on Monday, June 15, 2026.

Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.

Please make sure to add studentsupport@scholarshipamerica.org as well as the program email address as safe senders in your email contact list.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of NextEra Energy Foundation. Award checks will be made payable directly to the recipient. The recipient should check with their tax advisor for tax implications.

Payment will be processed in August.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic performance
  • Community service
  • Participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • An optional statement of uncommon personal or family circumstances
  • An online recommendation completed by an SECME club sponsor, teacher or guidance counselor
  • A 300 word essay

Essay topic: Reflect on the experiences and journey that have deepened your commitment to advanced STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) study. How do you envision leveraging your graduate/post-graduate education plans to do good things in the world and drive transformative change or to lead innovation?

Financial need, as calculated by Scholarship America, must be demonstrated.

All applicants must be FPL customers and addresses will be verified by Florida Power & Light Company before winners will be selected and announced.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of the NextEra Energy Foundation, NextEra Energy or Florida Power & Light Company play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Requirements

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
    • Student name
    • School name
    • Grades
    • Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken

NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.

One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than three business days after the application deadline date.

Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.
