Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. (BBH), in conjunction with its 150th Anniversary in 1968, established a scholarship program to provide financial assistance to employees’ children who are attending college or university.
Each year the Trustees of the Fund make available a specified sum for scholarships to be awarded on a competitive basis. The amount of the scholarship awards may vary depending upon the financial need of the applicants and their families. Maximum validity of an award is four years.
Recipients of BBH Undergraduate Fund Scholarship must attend a college or university that offers a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Sciences degree (or the equivalent) and that is accredited under the Scholarship America criteria for the relevant jurisdiction.
All phases of the scholarship competition, including selection of recipients and determination of the scholarship award amount, are handled by Scholarship America, a national nonprofit educational support and student aid service organization that seeks to involve and assist the private sector in expanding educational opportunities and encouraging educational achievement. Brown Brothers Harriman Undergraduate Scholarship Fund, BBH, its Partners and employees have no role in nor responsibility for the selection of award recipients or administration of the Program.
The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.
Eligibility
Applicants must be dependent* children of salaried, full-time employees of Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., or any of its subsidiaries, who have a minimum of two (2) years continuous employment with the company as of the application deadline date and remain employed as of the date recipients are notified.
Children of deceased or retired employees are also eligible.
* Dependent children are defined as sons, daughters, stepsons, stepdaughters, legally adopted children or legal wards supported solely by the guardian.
Applicants must be high school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll or students who are already enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited four-year college or university.
Awards
Financial need will be considered in determining the amount of each award.
If selected as a recipient, the student will receive Awards ranging from $3,500 to $5,500 will be granted for those who demonstrate financial need.
Potential recipients who do not demonstrate need or who do not provide financial information will be eligible to receive an honorarium of $2,000. Honorariums are renewable and will be administered in the same manner as other renewable awards under this program.
Awards are renewable up to three (3) years or until a bachelor’s degree is obtained, whichever occurs first. A student must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in a full-time course of study at a four-year college or university. Those who do not maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA will be considered on probation and will receive notice that they are to submit a transcript of their next term grades. Providing that probation term GPA is at or above a 3.0, the student will be eligible for renewal.
Awards are for undergraduate study only.
Notification
All applicants will be notified by email in July.
Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.
Payment of Scholarships
Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of BBH. Payments are made in one installment in mid- August. Checks are mailed to each recipient’s home address and are payable to the school the student will attend.
Students attending an international school may request payment be made directly to them if the college or university will not accept a check from a second party. In that case, the international student must provide proof of enrollment before a wire transfer can be made. Awards are wired to all Non-U.S. scholarship recipients once proof of enrollment and wire form has been received.
Selection of Recipients
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:
- Academic performance
- Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
- Work experience
- A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
- Unusual personal or family circumstances
- An online recommendation
Once scholarship recipients are selected, financial data is reviewed to determine the amount of each award. Recipients whose parents choose not to supply the requested financial information will be eligible to receive an honorarium only.
Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any Partner or employee of BBH play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision of Scholarship America as final.
Requirements
As part of your application, you must upload the following:
- A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
- Student name
- School name
- Grades
- Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

- Students in their final year of high school/upper secondary school and students who have not completed a full year of college/university must send copies of their official final grades/marks from the past three or four years of high school/upper secondary school and copies of their end-of-year exam results if applicable.
- Students who have completed one full year or more of college/university level courses should send a copy of their official college/university academic record for each year through the most recent grading/marking period.
Students must provide English translations for all non-English language documents. Copies of documents in original language should accompany all translations.
NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.
One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than three business days after the application deadline date.
