American Water Scholarship

American Water (NYSE: AWK) is the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the United States. The American Water Scholarship is awarding scholarships of $10,000 each to students in the states where American Water operates.

The scholarship is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Eligibility

Applicants to the American Water Scholarship must:

  • Be high school seniors or graduates, or current college undergraduates, residing and/or attending college in one of the following states:
  • Alabama
  • California
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Maryland
  • Missouri
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • West Virginia
  • Be planning to enroll in full-time undergraduate study, pursuing a certificate or degree in a non-medical STEM or business-related field, at an accredited four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on 4.0 scale (or its equivalent)
  • Able to demonstrate a sincere commitment to inclusion and diversity in their lives, community, or education in a non-medical STEM major or a business major.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $10,000 award. Up to 10 awards will be granted.

Awards are renewable up to three (3) additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of maintaining a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and full-time enrollment in an eligible major. Applicants must also continue to maintain residence and/or college enrollment
in one of the eligible states.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in June.

Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of American Water Works Service Company, Inc. Payment is made in early August.

Selection of Finalists

Scholarship finalists are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances
  • An online recommendation
  • Essay*

Financial need will be considered. Recipients must demonstrate need.

Selection of finalists is made by Scholarship America. American Water Works Service Company, Inc. will select recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

*Essay Topic

Reflect on your personal, professional, or school experiences, and provide specific examples of how you have demonstrated a sincere commitment to inclusion and diversity. How have these experiences influenced your perspective on the value of promoting inclusion and diversity in various aspects of your life?

Requirements

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

    • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
      • Student name
      • School name
      • Grades
      • Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

 

  • Copy of the first two pages of the most recently filed IRS Form 1040 used for the Financial Information section of the application.

NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.

One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than March 30, 2026 at 3:00 PM Central Time.
