Alabama Power Foundation Scholarship Program
The Alabama Power Foundation offers a scholarship program (the “Program”) to assist Alabama Power employees’ children who plan to continue their education in college or vocational-technical school.
Alabama Power Foundation Scholarship Program
Renewable scholarships are offered for full-time study at an accredited nonprofit institution of the student’s choice. Only children of Alabama Power employees are eligible to apply for this program. Southern Nuclear, the Georgia Power Foundation and SCS each have their own respective scholarship programs for employees’ children.
The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.
Eligibility
Applicants to the Alabama Power Foundation Scholarship Program must:
- Be dependent* children (including stepchildren) of full time Alabama Power (APCO) employees** who have a minimum of one year of employment with the company as of January 1 of the year in which the awards are granted. Employees must still be employed at the time the recipients are announced.*Dependent children are children who qualify as federal tax exemptions to the employee.
**Children of deceased employees of APCO who were employed for at least one year and were employed by the company at the time of death, and children of retired employees who are presently in pay status on the APCO monthly retirement payroll are also eligible. - Be high school seniors or graduates or be current postsecondary undergraduates for the Alabama Power Foundation scholarships. NOTE: Only high school seniors will be considered for the Alabama Power Presidential scholarships.
- Plan to enroll in full time undergraduate study at an accredited nonprofit two year or four year college, university or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year.
- Presidential scholarship recipients must reside in Alabama and plan to attend an in-state school.
Awards
Up to 22 total awards will be granted. Two (2) awards will be granted as follows:
Presidential Scholar – Four Year Award
- For a high school senior residing in Alabama who will attend a public four-year college in Alabama, one Presidential Scholarship will be awarded each year to the applicant who presents the most impressive combination of academic achievement, participation in extracurricular and community activities, and leadership qualities. Financial need is also a consideration.
- The award amount is equivalent to the cost of tuition and mandatory college fees at the college attended.
- Renewable for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first.
Presidential Scholar – VTA
- For high school senior residing in Alabama who will attend a vocational/technical/associates program at an accredited nonprofit two-year college or vocational-technical school in Alabama, one Junior Presidential Scholarship will be awarded each year to the applicant who presents the most impressive combination of academic achievement, participation in extracurricular and community activities, and leadership qualities. Financial need is also a consideration.
- The award amount is equivalent to the cost of tuition and mandatory college fees at the college attended.
- Renewable for one additional year or until an associate degree or certification is earned.
Up to 20 awards will be granted as follows:
Alabama Power Foundation Scholarships
- For high school seniors or graduate students already enrolled at an accredited nonprofit four-year college or university.
- The award amount is $2,500.
- The award may be applied to tuition, fees, and required books and supplies.
- Renewable for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first.
Alabama Power Foundation Vocational/Technical Scholarships
- For high school seniors or graduate students who plan to major in vocational/technical programs at an accredited nonprofit two-year college or vocational-technical school.
- The award amount is $2,500.
- The award may be applied to tuition, fees, and required books and supplies.
- Renewable for one additional year or until an associates degree or certification is earned.
Awards are for undergraduate study only. The program as designed has been submitted by Sponsor to the IRS for approval for its compliance with IRS Revenue Procedure 76-47 and SAI will administer it the manner approved by the IRS.
Selection Criteria and Notification
The program will use SAI recipient selection criteria including the consideration of the following:
- Academic performance
- Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
- Work experience
- A statement of career and educational goals and objectives
- Unusual personal or family circumstances
Financial need will be considered. Recipients must demonstrate need.
Scholarship America will notify all applicants in April. All applicants agree to accept the decisions as final.
Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.

Scholarship Payment
Scholarship America will issue checks on behalf of The Alabama Power Foundation in one installment in early August.
Presidential Awards: You will be required to submit a school statement to Scholarship America and Alabama Power Foundation. Once Alabama Power Foundation approves the award amount, the award will be processed in two installments for the 2026 fall and 2027 spring semesters.
Requirements
Supporting Documents
As part of your application, you must upload the following documents:
- A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
- Student name
- School name
- Grades
- Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.
- High School Seniors Only: Copy of the standardized test score results submitted on application (if not on transcript).
NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of those test scores separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.
Your application is not considered complete unless all required documents are submitted electronically.
