Aecon's John M. Beck Scholarship Program

There are a number of criteria which must be met by all applicants, including financial need. Renewable scholarships of up to four years in duration are offered for full-time study at an accredited postsecondary institution of the student’s choice. Select scholarship recipients are chosen from all applications each year.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be dependent children, legally adopted children, stepchildren, grandchildren, step-grandchildren or legal wards of full time permanent* Aecon Group Inc. non-union employees.
  • U.S. students must be 21 years of age or younger and must be high school seniors or must have graduated within the past year and are not currently enrolled in a postsecondary program.
  • Canadian students must be 21 years of age or younger and must be in their graduating year of secondary school, CEGEP or equivalent, or must have graduated within the past year and are not currently enrolled in a postsecondary program. CEGEP is a postsecondary program.
  • Plan to enroll in full time undergraduate study at an accredited community college, university or technical school located in Canada or the United States for the entire 2026-2027 academic year. Applicants must plan to attend a two, three, or four year program at the eligible institution.

Dependents of employees at the Vice President/General Manager level or above are ineligible.

*Eligible to participate in Aecon’s pension/retirement plan.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $2,500 award per academic year (for a total value of up to $10,000 over 4 years). Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first.

Renewal is contingent on the basis of maintaining a cumulative grade point average of C or 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent), full-time enrollment (12 credit hours per term) and (at Aecon’s discretion) continued parental employment*.

*Parental employment will be verified twice annually and eligibility will be determined on a case by case basis.

  • Verification of new recipients.
  • Verification before August cheques.

One award of $2,500 will be granted per academic year (for a total value of up to $10,000 over 4 years). Awards are for undergraduate and CEGEP study only.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in May. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Students that are not awarded a scholarship may reapply to the program each cycle they meet eligibility requirements.

Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.

Please make sure to add studentsupport@scholarshipamerica.org as well as the program email address as safe senders in your email contact list.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Aecon Construction Group Inc. Payments are made in in early August provided (at Aecon’s discretion) the student’s parent remains employed at Aecon Construction Group Inc.

The award check/cheque, issued in Canadian or U.S. currency, will be mailed to each recipient’s home address and are made payable to the school for the student.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic performance
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Honors and awards
  • Work experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances
  • An outside appraisal prepared by an unrelated adult who knows the student well

Financial need as calculated by Scholarship America must be demonstrated for the student to receive an award.

Academic evaluation of Canadian applicants will include a review of the grade/mark average based on the grading system used in Canada. This information is evaluated to complete the academic ranking of Canadian applicants.

Academic evaluation of U.S. students will include a review of the rank-in-class, grade point average based on the grading system used in the U.S. and test scores. This information is evaluated to complete the academic ranking of U.S. applicants.

Scholarship America will select up to 10 finalists, and Aecon Construction Group Inc. will select one recipient. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.
