Founded in 1992 by NBA Legends Dave DeBusschere, Dave Bing, Archie Clark, Dave Cowens and Oscar Robertson, Legends of Basketball (formerly known as the National Basketball Retired Players Association) is a nonprofit alumni association supporting former professional basketball players from the NBA, ABA, WNBA and Harlem Globetrotters.
Supported directly by the NBA and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), Legends of Basketball is dedicated to supporting members across all stages of life—while also honoring and investing in the communities that have supported players before, during, and after their basketball journeys.
As part of that work, the organization provides multiple scholarship opportunities for the families of members.

“As former players, we understand that the game gives us a platform, but it’s what we do with that platform that defines our legacy,” says Legends of Basketball CEO and 13-year NBA veteran Antonio Davis. “These scholarships are an extension of that responsibility. They allow us to invest in the next generation, to create opportunities that many of us didn’t have, and to ensure that our impact is felt far beyond the court. For the recipients, this isn’t just financial support, it’s a connection to a legacy of players who believe in their future.”
Scholarship America is proud to administer the Dave DeBusschere and Earl Lloyd Scholarships on behalf of the organization, and we sat down with representatives from Legends of Basketball to talk about the impact of their scholarships, and how they fit with the organization’s broader mission.
To start, tell us a little bit about the history and mission of Legends of Basketball.
Rooted in the pillars of camaraderie, health, financial stability, community, and family, the organization ensures that our members, and their families, have access to meaningful resources, opportunities, and support systems. At the same time, we are equally committed to extending that impact outward, creating programs and initiatives that uplift the broader communities connected to the game.
Our work extends beyond basketball, focusing on long-term well-being, personal development, and building pathways for continued impact that reach both our members and the communities that have been part of their journey.
When and how did the organization decide to start offering scholarships to members and their families?
Providing scholarships is a natural extension of our commitment to supporting our members and their families. While the program has evolved over time, its core purpose has remained the same: to help alleviate the financial burden of education and create opportunities for future generations connected to our membership.

As the needs of our members have grown, so has our approach, leading us to partner with Scholarship America to enhance how we administer, track, and expand access to these opportunities. Additionally, through this partnership, applicants are not only considered for Legends of Basketball scholarships but are also matched to additional funding opportunities that align with their background, interests, and qualifications.
This collaborative, value-added approach significantly expands access and ensures that more individuals benefit from the application process, even beyond our own program.
Your scholarships are named in memory of NBA greats Dave DeBusschere and Earl Lloyd. What makes these two legends such appropriate namesakes?
Dave DeBusschere, a Hall of Famer and one of the founding figures of the organization, represents leadership, legacy, and a commitment to building something greater than oneself. Naming our primary scholarship in his honor reflects his foundational role in shaping what Legends of Basketball stands for today.
Earl Lloyd, one of the first African American players in the NBA, symbolizes perseverance, courage, and progress. His legacy extends far beyond basketball, making him an ideal namesake for a scholarship focused on expanding access and supporting those with demonstrated financial need.
Together, these two legends embody the values of opportunity, equity, and impact that our scholarship programs aim to deliver.
How do the two scholarships differ from one another?
The Dave DeBusschere Scholarship serves as our primary scholarship program and is open to all eligible members and their families across Legends of Basketball.

The Earl Lloyd Scholarship is a supplemental opportunity specifically designed for NBA players (with three or more years of service) and their families who demonstrate financial need. Funded through the NBA Players Legacy Fund, it provides additional support to those who qualify.
In some cases, eligible recipients may benefit from both scholarships, maximizing the financial support available to them.
How do your scholarships complement Legends of Basketball’s other initiatives to support members and communities?
Our scholarship programs directly support several of our core pillars, particularly financial stability, family, and community. By investing in education, we are not only supporting individual recipients but also strengthening the broader ecosystems our members are part of.
These scholarships represent a long-term investment in generational impact, helping to create pathways for success beyond basketball and reinforcing our commitment to holistic member support.
The Dave DeBusschere and Earl Lloyd Scholarships are open for application through June 10 to eligible Legends of Basketball members and their families. To find more scholarship opportunities, visit our Browse Scholarships Page.
