Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program

The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program was established to connect talented, innovative scientists, engineers, and researchers with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) workforce.

SMART provides students with the tools needed to pursue higher education and begin a civilian career with the DoD. With a full scholarship, students pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degrees can focus on complex research to further the DoD’s mission and create lasting impact. SMART is a one-for-one commitment; for every year of degree funding, the scholar commits to working for a year with the DoD as a civilian employee.

SMART scholar, Joshua “Jay” Lavoie, who is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at Marymount University, says, “Since my journey began with SMART, the experiences I have had continue to motivate me to achieve the highest academic level possible. A unique opportunity provided by SMART is the ability to secure meaningful work advancing the various technologies that keep our nation safe each day. For those looking to find a way to pay for college, have a job after graduating, and start a career with the DoD, SMART answers the call. There is a great network of SMART scholars, past and present, that are eager to share their experiences and help others along the way.” Jay also received his bachelor’s and master’s through the SMART Program and will be working for the Marine Corps System Command upon graduation.

In addition to the internships, SMART scholars receive full tuition, annual stipends, health insurance, and book allowance while pursuing their degree. Upon degree completion, scholars begin working in a civilian position with their sponsoring DoD facility. The internships and work experience allow scholars the opportunity to learn from the greatest minds in STEM. Not only do scholars pursue their passion in their respective field during their educational phase, but they begin a journey towards an empowering career.

SMART awards over 400 scholarships annually to STEM students across the nation. Since inception, SMART has awarded over 4,200 scholarships with 91% of scholars completing their DoD service commitment. If you’re interested in becoming a SMART scholar, and you are pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. in one of 24 eligible STEM fields, don’t miss out on this opportunity!
