A Flat Tire Shouldn't Cost America an Apprentice: Retention Grants and Scholarships for Today's Workforce

Apprenticeship is expanding quickly, and the need for skilled workers keeps climbing. But fewer than half of registered apprentices finish their programs. Talent and commitment are usually not the problem. More often, an apprentice leaves because of an expense they could not cover, like a car repair or a missed paycheck.

Scholarship America will join Apprenticeships for America as a guest in AFA’s webinar series to talk about apprenticeship retention grants. These are small, fast awards that work much like scholarships and help apprentices stay on the job when something unexpected happens. Our team will give an early look at Scholarship America’s 2027 apprenticeship initiative. They will also cover how foundations, employers, and unions can use rapid-response support to help more apprentices finish.
