Awards

Up to seventeen scholarships will be awarded:

  • Up to three $4,000 renewable* awards for students attending a four-year college or university;
  • Up to seven $4,000 one-time awards for students attending a four-year college or university; and
  • Up to seven $1,500 one-time awards for students attending community colleges, technical and vocational schools.

*Renewable awards may be renewed up to three additional years for a total of $16,000 over four years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance in a full-time course of study at a four-year college or university, continued parental employment at Sempra, and continuation of the program by Sempra. If a recipient changes from a four-year school to a two-year or vocational-technical school, the award will be adjusted from $4,000 to $1,500 and will not be eligible for renewal.

All other awards are one-time only and past recipients may not reapply

Notification

All applicants will be notified in June.

Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.

Payment of Scholarships

All scholarships are paid in one installment each year in August. The award will be paid directly to the student’s educational institution electronically. If the institution is unable to accept electronic payments from Scholarship America, the award will be paid as a live check mailed to the student’s home address with the check made payable to the school. If the student drops out of school or is no longer a full-time student before completing the semester or quarter and does not re-enroll, he/she will forfeit the remainder of the award. The Company further reserves the right to terminate the scholarship if the parent’s employment with a Sempra company is terminated for cause such as dishonesty, theft or similar circumstances, in the sole discretion of the Company. Renewable awards will be awarded at $4,000* per year and paid on the above schedule.

* Renewable awards will be paid out $4,000 per academic year, up to a total of four years to a cumulative award amount of $16,000.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic performance
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances

Financial need is not considered.

Scholarship America is solely responsible for evaluating applications and choosing all award recipients for one-time awards. They will also identify 6 finalists for the four-year renewable awards. Sempra’s selection committee will interview these finalists and select the recipients of the $4,000 renewable awards. All finalists will receive a one-year $4,000 scholarship at minimum.

All applicants will be notified in June. Finalists will be notified about the renewable scholarships within two weeks of their interview with Sempra’s selection committee.
