Henry Moskowitz Future Leaders Scholarship Program

Henry Moskowitz was born in Kielce, Poland. Survivors of the Holocaust, Henry and his wife Rose met in Germany in 1948. The couple emigrated to the United States in 1951 with their two children, and two more were born in New York. They arrived in America virtually penniless, with no extended family to rely on and little more than the determination to rebuild their lives. Having lost so much in Europe, they needed to start over entirely from scratch—building a new home, raising a family, and creating a future in a country that was new to them.

Shortly after arriving in New York, Henry began investing in real estate, which was then coming out of a recession. From those extraordinarily modest beginnings, he built a business from the ground up. He assembled a group of more than 100 loyal investors and formed various apartment building purchase and development deals in Manhattan, Queens, and New Jersey.

In the mid-1960s, Henry acquired Ivy Hill Park Apartments in Newark, a landmark investment that Argo Real Estate successfully maintained through some of the city’s most challenging periods. By the 1970s, Henry’s firm, Argo Real Estate, became one of the primary owners and cooperative converters on Manhattan’s West End Avenue corridor. The firm continues that legacy today as owner/managers, developers, and brokers under the leadership of the second and third generations.

Henry’s philosophy was to invest in desirable locations and improve properties that had long been managed below their potential, through prudent renovations coupled with sound management. He was equally dedicated to investing in people, providing employees and associates with the tools they needed to boost their own lives and achieve career and financial success.

Henry lived in New York City until his passing in late 2008 at age 102. He and his wife Rose were blessed with 10 grandchildren.
