Legends of Basketball Dave DeBusschere and Earl Lloyd Scholarships
Legends of Basketball has established a scholarship program for members, their children, or their spouses who plan to continue their education in college.
Legends of Basketball Dave DeBusschere and Earl Lloyd Scholarships
The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.
Eligibility
Applicants to the Legends of Basketball Dave DeBusschere and Earl Lloyd Scholarships must:
- Be a current Legends of Basketball member, the child (natural, step, legally adopted), or the spouse of a current Legends of Basketball member.
- Be a high school senior, graduate, or current college undergraduate or graduate student.
- Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate or graduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, vocational-technical school, or graduate school in the U.S. for the entire upcoming academic year.
- Have a minimum grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale (or its equivalent) if a current college/university or graduate school student. There is no minimum GPA for high school senior applicants.
Staff and family members of the Legends of Basketball’s staff are ineligible.
The child or spouse of a deceased Legends of Basketball member who was in good standing at the time of his or her death will be deemed an Eligible Candidate for two (2) years after the member’s death. The Legends of Basketball will permit a maximum of two (2) scholarships to be awarded per Legends of Basketball Member (regardless of dependents).
Awards
If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a Dave DeBusschere Award of $5,000 award. Up to 30 Dave DeBusschere Awards will be granted.
An additional Earl Lloyd Award of $4,500 can be added to the Dave DeBusschere Award for up to 10 recipients who meet the following criteria:
- Demonstrate the most financial need
- Available only to NBA Legends with 3 or more years of service and eligible family members (self-reported status in the application)
Awards are not renewable; however, students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements. If a Legends of Basketball member has passed, then any previously awarded recipients may receive the scholarship funds until completion of their current degree so long as they re-apply for the scholarship and maintain the eligibility requirements.
Awards are for qualified education-related expenses only (tuition, fees, books, and required supplies/equipment). Awards amounts may be adjusted if award exceeds the cost of qualified education-related expenses.
Awards are for undergraduate and graduate study.
Notification
All applicants will be notified in July.
Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.
Payment of Scholarships
Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Legends of Basketball. Payment is made payable to the recipient’s institution in August.
Selection of Recipients
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:
- Academic performance
- Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
- Work experience
- A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
- Unusual personal or family circumstances
Financial need will be considered for the Earl Lloyd award. The Earl Lloyd award is available only to NBA Legends and eligible family members with at least three years of service as of the application deadline.
For the DeBusschere award, financial need will only be considered if needed as a tie-breaker between two applications after all other things have been considered.
Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Legends of Basketball play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.
Requirements
As part of your application, you must upload the following:
- A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
- Student name
- School name
- Grades
- Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.
- Copy of the first two pages of the most recently filed IRS Form 1040 used for the Financial Information section of the application. Please black out all social security numbers and bank account information.
NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.
Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.
