Charles L. Shor Foundation Epilepsy Scholarship
The Charles L. Shor Scholarship Fund has established a scholarship program for students currently being treated for active epilepsy seizures who plan to continue their education in college.
Charles L. Shor Foundation Epilepsy Scholarship
The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.
Eligibility
Applicants to the Charles L. Shor Foundation Epilepsy Scholarship must:
- Be a legal resident of the United States (U.S.)
- Have physician-documented, active epilepsy seizures within the previous 12 months as of the application deadline, not be a candidate for surgery, and be currently on medication to treat epilepsy.
- High school senior, high school graduate (including GED), or current college undergraduate
- Have not previously earned a bachelor’s degree, unless the applicant is seeking to enroll in a trade or vocational school program
- Plan to enroll in full-time or part-time* undergraduate study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school in the U.S. for the entire upcoming academic year.
*Part-time is defined as at least 6 credit hours per semester.
Employees, their family members, officers, and directors of the Charles L. Shor Scholarship Fund, Epilepsy Wellness Advocates, or the Charles L. Shor Scholarship Fund are ineligible to apply.
Awards
If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $5,000 award for the academic year. If possible under school policy, scholarship funds may stay in the student’s bursar account to be used for tuition and related educational costs for future terms, rather than being refunded or returned. Up to 81 awards will be granted.
Awards are for undergraduate study only.
Awards can be used for tuition, books, and required supplies. Checks are made payable to the school.
Notification
All applicants will be notified in late April.
Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.
Please make sure to add studentsupport@scholarshipamerica.org as well as the program email address as safe senders in your email contact list.
Payment of Scholarships
Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of the Charles L. Shor Scholarship Fund. Payment is made in early August.
Selection of Recipients
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:
- Limitations from diagnosis (as communicated in an essay up to 500 words).
- Financial need
Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of the Charles L. Shor Scholarship Fund play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.
Requirements
As part of your application, you must upload the following:
- A Physician Diagnosis Verification form completed by your physician.
- A copy of the first two pages of the most recently filed IRS Form 1040 used for the Financial Information section of the application. Please black out all social security numbers and bank account information.
