Honoring Stacey Abrams’s enduring impact as a champion for democracy, voting rights, equity, and climate reform, The Vanguard Scholarship empowers the next generation of women to lead the charge.
The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsors and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.
Applicants to the Vanguard Scholarship for Democracy, Justice and Social Change must:

Award distribution is to be determined based on the amount in the fund at the time of the program deadline. Each recipient will be granted a minimum of $4,000. The number of recipients will be based on the applicant pool and the fund amount available.
Awards are for undergraduate and graduate study only.
Awards can be used for any education-related expenses.
The Sponsors may contact recipients for purposes of event invitations, marketing, and/or other opportunities.
Recipients will gain access to a national mentorship network of civic leaders, policymakers, environmental advocates, and social justice activists.
Recipients will be requested to create and implement a Community Impact Project with the support of their mentor from the network.
All applicants will be notified in late May.

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of the Sponsors. Payments are made in August.

The Essay will be evaluated on authenticity, clarity of motivation, evidence of leadership, and commitment to advancing the mission of the scholarship.
Financial need is considered, but all qualifying students are welcome to apply.
Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.
Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.
All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

NOTE: If you are a freshman undergraduate and are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required. A high school transcript and test scores should ONLY be provided if you are a freshman undergraduate and you do not yet have your undergraduate transcript of grades available.
Two online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than three business days after the application deadline.
