George D. Bateman Memorial Scholarship Program
This scholarship program was established to assist graduating seniors of Falls High School (FHS) in International Falls, Minnesota, who plan to continue their education in college or vocational school programs. Renewable scholarships are offered each year for full-time study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice.
George D. Bateman Memorial Scholarship Program
The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.
About George D. Bateman
George D. Bateman grew up in southern Indiana and received a diploma from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. His teaching career brought him to Gilbert, Minnesota, where he met his wife, Bernice (“Barnie”). In 1945 they moved to International Falls with their two sons (David and Robert). Mr. Bateman continued his teaching career at Falls High School until his retirement. He and his wife lived in the International Falls area for the remainder of their lives. Their legacy was an expressed desire to give something back to the community they enjoyed so much.
Eligibility
Applicants to the George D. Bateman Memorial Scholarship Program must:
- Be a graduating senior in good standing from Falls High School (FHS) in International Falls, Minnesota, and demonstrate qualities of sound character and strong work ethic.
AND
- Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited four-year or two-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year.
AND
- Plan to pursue a degree in the fields of education (teaching), technology (math, science/physics/chemistry, engineering, biotech, information/communications, environmental, etc.), or healthcare (nursing, EMT, etc. ) or the vocational-technical study of trades (plumbing, welding, electrician, etc.).
Awards
Total authorized distribution for new awards is $5,000 annually, however, the sponsor may grant an exception to fund additional awards.
Two types of scholarship awards will be granted:
- Students pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree at a 4-year school: $5,000 annually; $20,000 maximum lifetime award.
- Students pursuing an Associate’s Degree/Certificate at a 2-year or vocational-technical school: $2,500 annually; $5,000 maximum lifetime award.
Awards are renewable up to one additional year or until an associate’s degree is earned or up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of satisfactory academic performance (maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent) and continued progress toward a degree in the chosen area of study.
Students may transfer from a two-year program to a four-year program, and their award and renewal terms will be adjusted accordingly.
A reasonable deferment of one (1) academic year may be allowed.
Awards are for undergraduate study only.
Notification
Applicants will be notified in July. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.
Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.

Payment of Scholarships
Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of The George D. Bateman Memorial Scholarship Program. Payment is made in one installment in July.
Selection of Recipients
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:
- Academic performance
- Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
- Work experience
- A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
- Unusual personal or family circumstances
Financial need is not considered. Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.
Requirements
As part of your application, you must upload the following:
- A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
- Student name
- School name
- Grades
- Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.
NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.
