The Kristy J. Hendrickson Memorial Scholarship
Landau Associates, Inc. has established a scholarship program to support women in engineering programs in the Pacific Northwest in honor of esteemed former coworker and co-owner, Kris Hendrickson.
The Kristy J. Hendrickson Memorial Scholarship
The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.
About Kris
A true Seattle native, Kris was born, raised, attended college, worked, and lived the majority of her adult life in the Seattle area. She attended the University of Washington, where she earned a degree in chemistry and mathematics (Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) in 1971 and a master’s in environmental engineering in 1982. After teaching and living abroad, she spent 15 years working for Boeing before being recruited to Landau Associates to begin what would become a 24-year legacy.
Not just an engineer, Kris was active in many capacities throughout her life. She enjoyed being a wife and mother, reading, sewing, gardening, cross-country skiing, baking, cooking in general, and was passionate about home-grown apple trees and their fruit. In all her endeavors, she contributed more than ability. She was always kind, patient, and compassionate.
Kris was a personal force and intensely intelligent. She was adept at both interpreting information and reading people. Coworkers and others who knew her from the broader environmental industry have said that her influence in shaping Landau Associates was second only to that of its founder. When Landau’s current CEO, Chip Halbert, was young and ambitious, Kris advised him to learn to say “no” just as well as, even if less frequently than, he said “yes” to opportunities and requests. It’s the kind of wisdom she imparted to many at Landau Associates: lessons not just on how to succeed in consulting, but in life. Kris invested in younger generations to the betterment of the company as a whole, and she did it by bettering and empowering individuals. Now Landau Associates is taking up that torch to help the next generation of Krises enter and be successful in the engineering field.
Eligibility
Applicants to the Kristy J. Hendrickson Memorial Scholarship must:
- Self-identify as female
- Be pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil-Environmental Engineering, Atmospheric Engineering, or Geologic Engineering
- Be high school seniors, high school graduates, current college undergraduates, or graduate level students
- Reside in or attend school in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Louisiana, Texas or Florida
- Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate or graduate study at an accredited four-year college, university, or graduate school for the entire upcoming academic year
- Have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent)
Children of Landau Associate employees are eligible but will not be given special consideration.
Awards
If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $10,000 award. Up to 1 award will be granted. Assuming there are qualified applicants, preference will be given to applicants studying Environmental Engineering.
Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance (maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale), full-time enrollment in an eligible field of study, and continuation of the program by Landau Associates. Awards may transfer from an undergraduate degree to a graduate degree if the student enrolls in graduate study the semester following undergraduate graduation.
Awards are for undergraduate and graduate study only.
Awards can be used for any education-related expenses.
Award recipients may be offered internship or career opportunities with Landau Associates.
Notification
All applicants will be notified in early March.
Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.

Payment of Scholarships
Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Landau Associates. Payment is made in early August.
Selection of Recipients
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:
- Academic record
- Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
- Work experience
- A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
- Unusual personal or family circumstances
Financial need will be considered. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need.
Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Landau Associates play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.
Requirements
As part of your application, you must upload the following:
- A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
- Student name
- School name
- Grades
- Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.
- Copy of the first two pages of the most recently filed IRS Form 1040 used for the Financial Information section of the application. Please black out all social security numbers and bank account information.
NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.
Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.
