NTT Research Fellowship
NTT Research Foundation has established a fellowship program for current PhD students pursuing full-time study in Applied Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Quantum Science & Engineering, and Physics at select research universities.
NTT Research Fellowship
The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.
Eligibility
Applicants to the NTT Research Fellowship must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be a third-year (or higher) doctoral student for the Fall 2026 semester
- Be enrolled full-time in one of the following PhD programs at one of the research universities indicated for the entire upcoming academic year
- Biomedical Engineering Award
- Georgia Institute of Technology (Biomedical Engineering PhD Program)
- Johns Hopkins University (Biomedical Engineering PhD Program)
- Vanderbilt University (Biomedical Engineering PhD Program)
- Photonics and Quantum Physics Award
- Harvard University (Applied Physics PhD, Quantum Science & Engineering PhD Programs)
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Electrical Engineering PhD, Physics PhD Programs)
- Stanford University (Applied Physics PhD, Electrical Engineering PhD, and Physics PhD Programs)
- Yale University (Applied Physics PhD Program)
- Biomedical Engineering Award
- Be nominated by the Department Chair of each eligible program
NTT Research, Inc. and NTT Data, Inc. employees and children are ineligible to apply.
Awards
Up to two full-ride awards will be granted. If the applicant pool allows, one Biomedical Engineering Award and one Photonics and Quantum Physics Award will be granted.
Awards are intended to cover tuition, fees, books, and supplies. Award amounts will be determined based on the cost of attendance as determined by each recipient’s college or university, plus a stipend for books and supplies. Recipients must submit their cost of attendance before each academic year. If recipients have changes to their enrollment mid-year, their award amount may be adjusted.
Awards are renewable up to three years or until a PhD is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of satisfactory academic performance and continued full-time enrollment in an eligible program at an eligible university.
Awards are for PhD study only.
Recipients may be offered a living stipend through NTT Research Foundation. Sponsor will manage the entire stipend process, including disbursement and tax liability, and reporting.
Recipients may be offered an optional internship with NTT Research, Inc.
Notification
All applicants will be notified in late May.
Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.

Payment of Scholarships
Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of NTT Research Foundation. Payments are made in August and December.
Selection of Recipients
Fellowship recipients are selected on the basis of:
- Academic performance
- Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
- Work experience
- Two online letters of recommendation completed by faculty members from a previous or current university
- Unusual personal or family circumstances
- Four essay responses to the following prompts:
- What is the intent of your research and what inspired you to focus on this subject? (3,000 characters)
- We are interested in gaining insights into your passions and motivations. Could you please describe events in your life that may have shaped your perspectives? Any relevant successes or achievements? Try to discuss not just where you’ve been but also where you hope to go in your career. (3,000 characters)
- How do you think receiving this Fellowship could make an impact and help you achieve your goals? (1,000 characters)
- Who has been your biggest influence or inspiration? (1,000 characters)
Financial need is not considered.
NTT Research Foundation will review applications and select recipients.
Requirements
As part of your application, you must upload the following:
- A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
- Student name
- School name
- Grades
- Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.
- An acceptance letter verifying acceptance to an eligible program at an eligible university
Two letters of recommendation must be submitted online on your behalf no later than three business days after the application deadline date. Recommendations must be completed by faculty members from a previous or current university. Your application will be considered ineligible if less than two letters of recommendation are received.
Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.
