The Scott Cook and Signe Ostby Scholarship Program for Children of Intuit Employees

Students enrolled in full-time study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice may qualify for up to $47,600 in total funding over four years. The sponsors’ intent is to reward students who have demonstrated that they are “go-getters,” make the best of any circumstances and make a real difference due to their personal leadership, drive, determination, and organizational skills.

This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined by the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, disability, or national origin.

Eligibility

Applicants to the Program must be:

Children or direct dependents, age 25 and under, of regular full-time Intuit employees in any country who have a minimum of one year of employment with the company as of the application deadline, and either of the following:

    • Students in the 8th through 11th grades who are already enrolled or are planning to enroll in a private secondary school.
    • High school seniors, students in their final year of higher secondary/CEGEP, or graduates who are enrolled or are planning to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational- technical program for the upcoming academic year.

Children of the President and Chairman are not eligible.

Awards

Awards

Financial need will be considered in determining the amount of the award. Awards will range from $5,950 to $11,900 per year. Applicants who show no financial need or choose not to complete the financial section will be eligible to receive the minimum award of $5,950 per year. We strongly encourage all applicants to complete the financial section of the application before submitting, as Scholarship America cannot accept this information at a later date.

Award amounts are listed in U.S. dollars (USD) and award payments will be issued in USD. Recipients may choose to receive award payments in their local currency when available.

Students enrolled for only part of an academic year (e.g., a quarter or semester) may receive a pro-rated award.

Awards can be used for full-time study at a private secondary school or at an accredited postsecondary or vocational-technical institution of the student’s choice and are intended to pay for tuition, fees, books and supplies, and required equipment.

All awards are renewable up to three times or until graduation, whichever occurs first, by maintaining a 3.0 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and full-time enrollment for at least one quarter or semester. Students enrolled in their first year of college may renew their award by maintaining a 2.7 cumulative grade point average. Students not meeting the GPA requirement may submit an appeal stating extenuating circumstances regarding their academic performance; such appeals will be reviewed by the Sponsor. Recipients of private secondary or upper or higher secondary awards must reapply for postsecondary awards, provided that an individual recipient may receive a maximum of four years of Program funding across their secondary and postsecondary studies.

Applicants may receive an award from both The Scott Cook and Signe Ostby Scholarship Program for Children of Intuit Employees and The George A. Hansen Scholarship Program for Children of Intuit Employees in the same year.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected based on:

  • Academic performance
  • Leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Paid work and entrepreneurial experience
  • A “go-getter” statement describing a personal achievement
  • An online recommendation.
  • An optional statement of home responsibilities
  • An optional statement of personal circumstances/hardships

Once scholarship recipients are selected, financial data is reviewed to determine the amount of each award.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance do the sponsors play a part in the selection process. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Notification

Applicants will be notified in late March. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.

Notifications are sent via email. When setting up your account, avoid using a school or work email. Instead, use an active, personal email address that you will continue to have access to.

Please make sure to add studentsupport@scholarshipamerica.org as well as the program email address as safe senders in your email contact list.

Scholarship America evaluates the eligible applicant’s academic performance, leadership in school and community activities, entrepreneurial and work experience, personal achievement essay response, the online recommendation from a non-related adult, and optional statements submitted regarding home
responsibility and personal circumstances/hardships.

The program sponsors’ intent is to award “go-getter” applicants who make the best out of any circumstance because of their leadership, drive, determination, and organizational skills.

Financial need is not a factor in the selection process, but Scholarship America considers financial need in determining the award amount

No, Scholarship America evaluates high school and post-secondary applicants as separate groups.

No, the selection process is handled exclusively by Scholarship America.

No, employee tenure and employment status are only utilized for eligibility purposes.

The exact number of recipients depends on the number of eligible students who apply. In recent years, about 100 new scholarships have been awarded each year.

Scholarships will range from $5,950 to $11,900 annually for up to four years (the amounts are adjusted annually for inflation). The exact amount is based on Scholarship America’s determination of financial need. Scholarship recipients who skip the financial section will receive the minimum award. We highly encourage all applicants to complete the financial information section, even if they are unsure they will qualify for a need-based award. Scholarship America cannot accept this information after the application has been submitted.

No, applicants send the application and financial information directly to Scholarship America, which holds it in strict confidence.

Please consult your tax advisor to confirm the tax treatment of the award. In the U.S., scholarship awards should be tax-free to the extent that the award does not exceed expenses incurred for tuition, fees, books, supplies, and required equipment (not including room and board).

To complete the financial section, please utilize the most recent tax returns (e.g., IRS Form 1040).

For students based in the U.S., checks will be made payable to the student’s school but will be sent to the student’s home address. It is the student’s responsibility to forward the check to the school.

International recipients will receive their awards via wire transfer.

Scholarship awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and required supplies. Awards may not be used to pay for room and board expenses.

Personal donations from Scott Cook and Signe Ostby.

All applicants (award recipients and non-recipients) will be notified in late March (timing is subject to change) at the email address used to register on the Scholarship America application portal.

Yes, Intuit will send company-wide communications that the Scott Cook and Signe Ostby Scholarship Program recipients have been named and are available for review on the scholarship webpage. Awarded
students will remain posted on the scholarship webpage until the following year.

The student should contact Scholarship America to request a deferral of the scholarship award. Scholarship America will review the request and provide their determination.

The student may continue to receive the scholarship if they continue to qualify.

Students receiving renewable scholarships must submit a brief online renewal application provided by Scholarship America each year, usually in January, with a due date in February (students that need more time should contact Scholarship America before the deadline). Students must upload their transcript as part of the renewal application.

Scholarship America renews the scholarship if the student maintains full-time enrollment and a cumulative grade point average of at least a “B” (3.0 on a 4.0 scale, except for the first year of college, when the minimum GPA is 2.7). Please note that students who receive scholarship funds for private secondary school must reapply to receive funding for post-secondary or vocational study (but the maximum of four years of scholarship funding applies to all levels of study
combined).

If you did not meet the minimum GPA needed to renew and wish to describe extenuating circumstances that impacted your academic performance, please submit this information with your renewal application.
