Nation’s leading nonprofit scholarship organization adds higher-education experts and Fortune 500 executives to its governing board
MINNEAPOLIS (March 1, 2017) – Scholarship America®, the nation’s leading nonprofit scholarship and educational support organization, is pleased to announce the election of three new members to its national Board of Trustees. They are:
- Michael Davis, human-resources executive and principal of Michael L. Davis, LLC, Minneapolis, MN and Washington, DC
- Joyce Smith, CEO of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), Arlington, VA
- Mark P. Turchan, director of strategic planning and development at Deere & Company, Waukee, IA
Michael Davis is principal of Michael L. Davis, LLC, working selectively as senior human resources advisor, coach, mentor and educator. He retired from General Mills in 2014, having served as the company’s chief human resources officer since 2008. Since 2006, Davis has been an adjunct professor at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, where he teaches graduate-level classes in human resources topics. He is also an ongoing member of the Compensation Committee at Allina Health Systems and has served on the boards of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Historical Society and the Minneapolis Club.
Joyce Smith served as NACAC associate executive director and acting executive director before being named NACAC’s executive director (now CEO) in February 1997. An admissions expert with more than 40 years of experience, Smith has served in college admissions counseling as a practitioner and manager through her work with professional associations and organizations, including the College Board. She is a past member of Scholarship America’s Advisory Board, and has served on the Boards of Directors of the Association of Independent School Admission Professionals and the Institute for Higher Education Policy.
Mark Turchan has been with Deere & Company since 2007, when he joined John Deere Financial and managed merger and acquisition activities, strategy and product development. He has led Deere’s corporate strategy deployment efforts and the development of Deere’s next Heavy Duty Class Diesel Engine solutions at John Deere Power System; since 2016, he has led strategy and business optimization in Deere’s Intelligent Solutions Group. Turchan has served previously on the Iowa Dollars for Scholars regional board, Scholarship America’s Dollars for Scholars Regional Structure Task Force and Scholarship America’s Dollars for Scholars Leadership Council.
