More than $4.2 million has been distributed for the September 2009 semester; the remaining half will be dispersed in December for the semester beginning January 2010. Since the first awards in January 2002, the Families of Freedom Fund will, with this year's awards, have distributed more than $46.6 million to approximately 1,400 individuals.
2009-07-31 Scholarship America Announces Resignation of President Scholarship America is bidding farewell to president & CEO Dr. Clifford L. Stanley, Major General, USMC (Retired). Dr. Stanley will be leaving Scholarship America effective July 31. The search for his successor will begin immediately; Board of Trustees Chair Mim Schreck will be serving as interim president through the search process.
In addition, Scholarship America is pleased to announce that it will award a scholarship in Dr. Stanley's name, in recognition of his five years of outstanding service. Visit our donation page to contribute, and download the news release to read more.
The Johnsons established the scholarship program in 1991 to help young people from Owatonna continue their postsecondary education. Since the Fund’s inception, more than $846,400 has been awarded to local students. The awards are a combination scholarship grant and loan, with the loaned portion remaining interest-free while the student is attending school.
This year’s recipients are Kayla Joachim from Claremont, Minn., and David Bulger, Amy Chatelaine, James Ebeling, Laurel Greiner, Kristi Hassing, Eric Muchow, Rebecca, Rasp, Laura Satterlund, and Alyssa Schutter from Owatonna, Minn.
2009-07-01 Scholarship America and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities Announce Strategic Partnership to Improve the Lives of Youth Scholarship America and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities (BBBS) have forged an important partnership in support of Twin Cities' youth. This partnership will link the services that both organizations currently provide to youth, to assure that a greater number of Twin Cities students have access to a continuum of services that will help them succeed from elementary school through postsecondary education and beyond.
"This partnership is an important step in providing holistic services to youth as they make their way from secondary education to postsecondary education and beyond," says Dr. Clifford L. Stanley, President & CEO of Scholarship America. "Working together, we can assure that students understand that they, too, have access to postsecondary education."
2009-06-30 Scholarship America Recognizes Select Dollars for Scholars Volunteers with National Award Scholarship America honored five Dollars for Scholars volunteers during fiscal year 2009 by presenting them each with the National Honor Roll award, which recognizes volunteers who are instrumental in successfully guiding the course of their local chapter in a significant and beneficial way.
Marie Landino from Woburn High School Scholarship Fund in Woburn, Mass. was selected to receive the Award in September 2008. Susan Nocella, Margaret Gagnon, and Lynn Ebrecht, also from Woburn High School Scholarship Fund, as well as Joan Bonsignore from Island Trees Dollars for Scholars in Levittown, NY, received the award in June 2009.
2009-05-08 Longtime Volunteer and Washington State Senator Ken Jacobsen Receives Community Hero Award Northwest Dollars for Scholars® has selected Sen. Ken Jacobsen to receive the Northwest Dollars for Scholars Community Hero Award for his ongoing commitment to higher education. Randy Dorn, Superintendent of Public Instruction, will present the award at the Seventh Annual Light the Fire for Education Reception on May 21.
Jacobsen was instrumental in starting and developing Northwest Dollars for Scholars, a division of Scholarship America®. He also started the Community Scholarship Matching Grant Program, which provides $2,000 grants to 100 scholarship foundations each year.

2009-03-16 Scholarship America Names Kit Briem Director, Major Gifts Scholarship America is pleased to welcome Kit Briem to the position of Director, Major Gifts. Briem brings twenty years of nonprofit leadership experience to Scholarship America, most recently at the International Wolf Center.

2009-02-03 Longtime Scholarship America Volunteer Honored by National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities Morgan Odell, long-time volunteer and former Board member of Scholarship America, the nation’s largest non-profit, private-sector scholarship and educational support organization, was awarded the 23rd annual Henry Paley Memorial Award by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the association’s national meeting in Washington, DC. The award recognizes individuals who have worked to advance educational opportunity in the United States.
The Drum Major Awards recognize two individuals or organizations annually that have made significant contributions toward realizing Dr. King's dream of equality,
social justice, and peace and have answered Dr. King's 1968 call for citizens to be 'drum majors for justice.
In her position, Ms. Quinn Roddy will have overall responsibility for the organization's designated funds and will have primary responsibility for strategic and managerial leadership of the over $100 million dollar Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund.
