Scholar StoriesLee Ying Wu is a recent scholarship recipient, but she's already begun to give back. Lee Ying was a perfect choice to receive a scholarship from Chicago HOPE Dollars for Scholars, which awards renewable scholarships to students in their downtown Chicago community. She was valedictorian of her class and heavily involved in community service, but more than that, she came from a humble background. When she was 7 years old, Lee Ying and her parents migrated to Chicago from China. Her parents hardly spoke English, and Lee Ying knew that in order to have a successful future, she needed the skills to better communicate with her peers. Over the course of her school years, despite starting so late, she successfully learned English, and excelled in the classroom to such an extent that she earned one of the first scholarships ever given by Chicago HOPE Dollars for Scholars. Lee Ying is now in her second year at MIT, and she is already offering ideas and help to the the chapter that helped her out. This summer, she plans on starting a summer ACT prep course for Chicago public school students. It's a way to give back, and to further prepare the next classes of students for college. Lee Ying is just one of many examples of students not only receiving help from Dollars for Scholars, but committing to give back as well.
