ParentShop
ParentShop is a series of interactive workshops that address how parents can support and encourage learning. Parents learn how to guide themselves and their children through major life transitions, advocate for their children in school, and navigate college admissions and financial aid. Available in both English and Spanish, the curriculum includes fast facts, activities, references and a user-friendly Facilitator's Manual. The workbook contains the five modules listed below.
Module One: Self Discovery
By the end of Module One, parents will:
- Identify their own skills, interests, abilities and learning styles
- Create a peer support system that encourages involvement in their children's education and their own growth as lifelong learners
- Learn to set short- and long-term goals and how to help their children develop planning and organizational skills that recognize their personal styles
- Understand age-appropriate development stages and academic skills or standards
- Identify and practice strategies for supporting their
children's success

Module Two: Home and School Relationships
By the end of Module Two, parents will:
- Create meaningful communication links among their
children and their children's schools and/or selected
collegiate institutions
- Practice and use a process for teacher/parent/student conferences
- Understand the meaning and value of homework and standardized tests

Module Three: Career Awareness and Exploration
By the end of Module Three, parents will:
- Understand the economic benefits of selected careers
and type/cost of related postsecondary education
- Identify career areas that match their students' current talents and interests
- Identify and practice strategies to help their children
explore various careers
- Make the link between interests, abilities and values and career choices
- Relate careers to academic preparation

Module Four: College Preparation
By the end of Module Four, parents will:
- Identify strategies that will help their children prepare
for college
- Understand the basis for college selection and admission
- Identify the costs of various types of postsecondary education
- Identify college financing sources
