Director, National Grants

Position Summary/Purpose:

The Director, National Grants is responsible for supporting Scholarship America’s national programs and operations by implementing the grants program. Responsible for planning, applying for, tracking and monitoring, reporting on and evaluating corporate, foundation and public funding. Responsible for initiating and maintaining contact with prospective and current funders. Responsible for supporting Dollars for Scholars regions in their grant writing and research. May perform other development duties including general advancement writing, corporate partnerships and individual fundraising. Reports to the VP, Advancement.

This description covers the primary purpose and principal duties of the job.  It is not intended to give all details or a step-by-step account of the way each procedure or task is performed and is subject to change as necessary.

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward corporate, foundation and public grants in support of Scholarship America priorities.
  • Provide advancement expertise and support to Scholarship America program and administrative staff.
  • Provide leadership to staff in researching, writing, editing and submitting grant proposals and in all required internal and external reporting.
  • Maintain accurate and complete database and detailed records of all funding requests and awards.
  • Track award requirements and work with staff to ensure full compliance through timely and complete data collection and project narrative and budget reports.
  • Proactively create relationships with prospective funders and serve as liaison with funders as needed.
  • Proactively seek relationships with potential corporate partners/sponsor and work with VP, Advancement and other advancement staff on developing sponsorship program.
  • Provide advancement- and project management-related expertise to programs and grant projects as needed (current example: advancement oversight and project activities for Dreamkeepers program)
  • Support regional grantseeking from research and providing boilerplate information to editing to full completion for grants of national significance.
  • Represent Scholarship in professional activities and organizations
  • Monitor national and local corporate, foundation and public funding trends and activity, to identify new opportunities.
  • As needed, provide general writing and editing for Advancement division including for annual campaign, other appeals, newsletter
  • Function as an effective member of the Advancement team.

Qualifications:
Minimum requirements in terms of educational background work experience, licenses/certifications or other knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • 5+ years’ experience in grants management
  • Prior success obtaining and managing corporate, foundation and public funding, including grants of $1 million and above.
  • Excellent command of English, with the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including grammar, spelling, punctuation and editing skills.
  • Highly organized, strong attention to detail in order to produce the highest quality work, including follow up and follow through.
  • Strong research, data management and evaluation skills.
  • Related bachelor’s degree.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Office
  • Raiser’s Edge experience a plus.
